A source of clean energy, wind is categorized by wind power classes, which are based on normal wind velocity. The classes vary from Class 1 (the lowest) to Class 7 (the maximum). In general, at 50 meters , wind speed Class 4 or greater is practical for generating wind power with substantial turbines. Class 4 and over are considered excellent resources. Specific locations in the Class 3 zones could have greater wind power classes at 80 meters than revealed on the 50 meter map as a consequence of possible elevated wind shear. Due to the advances in machinery, a number of locations in the Class 3 zones may proper for utility-scale wind power development. The Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) published a new wind resource chart for Maine. This informational chart explains windpower estimates at 50 meters above ground level and displays the power that can be used for utility-scale wind development. Future plans are to give wind energy estimates at 100 feet, which are practical for identifying smaller windpower opportunities. |
