This chart displays that California has wind supply suitable with utility-scale production. The areas of good-to-excellent supply are concentrated in southeastern California. Notable good and excellent resource locations include the mountains east of San Diego, San Gorgonio Pass near Palm Springs, the Tehachapi Mountains southeast of Bakersfield, and areas in the Mojave Desert. In northern California, the areas of Altamont and Solano near San Francisco have good and excellent windpower. Ridge crest locations throughout the state may also have good wind resource.

A renewable energy source, airstream is classified by wind power classes, these are derived from average wind speeds. These classes vary from Class 1 (the lowest) to Class 7 (the top). Ordinarily, at 50 meters , wind speed Class 4 or greater can be practical for producing wind power with sizeable turbines. Class 4 and higher are deemed excellent energy supplies. Special locations in the Class 3 zones can have higher wind power classes at 80 meters than shown on the 50 meter map due to possible high wind shear. Given the improvements in technologies, some regions in the Class 3 locations may proper for large scale wind power company development.
