As a renewable resource, wind is categorized according to wind power classes, these are derived from normal wind speeds. These classes span from Class 1 (the slowest) to Class 7 (the top). Ordinarily, at 50 meters , windpower Class 4 or higher can be functional for producing wind energy with big turbines. Class 4 and above are deemed good energy supplies. Special areas in the Class 3 areas could have greater wind power classes at 80 meters than exposed on the 50 meter map as a result of potential elevated wind shear. Given the advances in technologies, some zones in the Class 3 areas may correct for large scale wind power development. The Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) developed a new wind supply plan for the state, Connecticut. This windpower diagram explains wind energy estimates at 150 feet above the ground and depicts the supply that could be used for utility-scale wind development. Future plans are to provide wind energy estimates at 30 meters, which are functional for identifying smaller wind energy production opportunities. |
