Pennsylvania has wind supply suitable with utility-scale wind farms. The good and excellent wind supply areas are concentrated on ridge crests in the southwestern part of Pennsylvania, positioned southwest of Altoona and southeast of Pittsburgh.

A renewable resource, airstream is classified according to wind power classes, which are created from normal air speeds. The classes range from Class 1 (the lowest) to Class 7 (the top). Overall, at 150 feet , wind power Class 4 or greater is effective for generating wind energy with big turbines. Class 4 and higher are considered good energy supplies. Specific areas in the Class 3 regions could have greater wind power class values at 80 meters than displayed on the 50 meter map because of potential high wind shear. Because of the improvements in machinery, a number of locations in the Class 3 areas may suitable for utility-scale wind power development.

The Department of Energy's Wind Program and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) published a fresh wind resource plan for the state of Pennsylvania. This wind map indicates wind energy estimates at 150 feet above the ground and shows the resource that possibly will be used for wind energy companies. Coming plans are to provide wind energy estimates at 100 feet, which are useful for identifying smaller wind turbine opportunities.
