A renewable resource, airstream is classified by wind power classes, which are created from normal air speeds. The classes span from Class 1 (the lowest) to Class 7 (the maximum). Ordinarily, at 50 meters , windpower Class 4 or greater is functional for producing wind power with large turbines. Class 4 and higher are considered good energy supplies. Specific areas in the Class 3 areas might have superior wind power class values at 80 meters than revealed on the 50 meter map as a result of potential elevated wind shear. Because of the advances in equipment, some locations in the Class 3 areas may appropriate for utility-scale wind power company development. The Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) published a new wind power plan for the state of Kentucky. This informational diagram displays wind speed estimates at 150 feet above the ground and indicates the resource that may possibly be used for wind power companies. Future plans are to provide wind power estimates at 30 meters, which are informative for locating small wind turbine opportunities. |
