A source of clean energy, wind is categorized by wind power classes, these are based on average air speeds. These classes vary from Class 1 (the slowest) to Class 7 (the peak). Generally, at 50 meters , wind power Class 4 or higher can be useful for producing wind power with substantial turbines. Class 4 and above are deemed excellent resources. Special areas in the Class 3 regions could have superior wind power classes at 80 meters than revealed on the 50 meter map as a result of possible elevated wind shear. Due to the advances in technologies, some regions in the Class 3 regions may appropriate for utility-scale wind power development. The Department of Energy's Wind Program and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) published a new wind resource chart for the state of Michigan. This informational map shows windpower estimates at 50 meters above ground level and indicates the supply that possibly will be used for utility-scale wind development. Yet to come plans are to offer wind power estimates at 100 feet, which are constructive for identifying smaller wind power opportunities. |
