This map shows that Washington has wind resources suitable with utility-scale production. The largest contiguous locations of good and excellent windpower are located in the central section of the state. They are condensed in the Kittitas Valley northwest of Yakima, on the ridges left of the Columbia River northeast of Yakima, and in the Horse Heaven Hills above of the Columbia River near the Oregon border. Another area of good and very good supply is above of the Blue Mountains in southeastern Washington. Ridge crest locations all through the map can also have strong wind supply A source of clean energy, airstream is organized according to wind power classes, these are derived from normal air speeds. The classes span from Class 1 (the least) to Class 7 (the top). Ordinarily, at 50 meters , wind speed Class 4 or higher can be effective for making wind energy with larger turbines. Class 4 and higher are considered excellent energy supplies. Specific areas in the Class 3 regions could have superior wind power classes at 80 meters than displayed on the 50 meter map due to potential high wind shear. As a result of the improvements in technology, some locations in the Class 3 regions may appropriate for utility-scale wind power company development. |
