A renewable energy source, airstream is classified by wind power classes, which are made from normal air velocity. The classes span from Class 1 (the lowest) to Class 7 (the top). Ordinarily, at 50 meters , windpower Class 4 or higher is effective for generating wind power with sizeable turbines. Class 4 and higher are deemed good resources. Particular areas in the Class 3 zones might have greater wind power class values at 80 meters than displayed on the 50 meter map as a result of potential high wind shear. Given the improvements in technologies, many zones in the Class 3 areas may correct for utility-scale wind power development. The Department of Energy's Wind Program and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) produced a new wind power chart for Alaska. This informational diagram displays wind energy estimates at 150 feet above ground level and displays the power that could be used for utility-scale wind development. Future goals are to give wind power estimates at 100 feet, which are constructive for identifying small wind turbine opportunities. |
